1. What is Adopt A Highway?

A public service program for environmentally-conscious citizen's groups to make a personal contribution to a cleaner environment by volunteering to pick up litter along Lake County's highway system.

2. What does my group have to do?

Your group assigns a representative to work with the Lake County Division of Transportation's Adopt A Highway Program Coordinator. The program coordinator will help your group select an available section of county highway to adopt. Your group agrees to pick up litter at least twice a year for a minimum of two years. Pickup dates are arranged in advance with the Lake County Division of Transportation. Watch the Adopt A Highway safety video before participating in a cleanup event. Adopt A Highway Safety Video.

3. How does Lake County work with my group?

The Division of Transportation:
Erects a highway sign to recognize your group's efforts
Provides high-visibility safety vests and a safety training DVD
Removes filled bags and heavy or hazardous items from the roadside - groups are encouraged to recycle materials for their own benefit.

4. What else should I know?

Participants must be at least 10 years old. Participants under 18 years old must have adequate adult supervision. Signups are processed twice yearly - spring applications are accepted until the last Friday of January and are effective April 1; fall applications are accepted until the last Friday of August and are effective November 1.
