[ARCHIVED] Man Flees Following Traffic Crash in Stolen Vehicle

On September 12, 2017 at approximately 10:00PM, a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was on patrol in the area of West Sullivan Lake Road and Four Season Boulevard, Lakemoor.  The Sheriff’s Deputy located a 2013 Nissan Altima driving in the area, which was reported stolen from a residence in Volo on September 5th.  The Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, however, the driver refused to stop.  Due to the driver’s refusal to pull over and the risk to other motorists, the Sheriff’s Deputy discontinued his attempt to stop the stolen vehicle.

A short time later, the Sheriff’s Deputy approached the intersection of Route 12 and Molidor Road in Volo, and discovered a traffic crash.  Preliminary investigation shows a 2014 Kenworth Tractor/Trailer was traveling northbound on Route 12.  The driver of the Kenworth, a 50 year-old man of Troy, Missouri, was proceeding through the intersection on a green light.  The driver of the stolen Nissan traveled eastbound through the same intersection, disobeying a red light.  The Kenworth and Nissan collided in the intersection.  The driver of the Kenworth was uninjured.

After the crash, the driver of the stolen Nissan fled from the scene on foot southbound through a wooded area.  Two K-9 Teams from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office along with a K-9 Team from McHenry County Sheriff, and a K-9 Team from Palatine Police aided in the search for the man.  They tracked the scent of the man for approximately one-half mile and the scent ended.  The man remains at large and no further description of the man is currently available.

The stolen vehicle is being processed for evidence to aid in the identification of the driver.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the man driving the stolen car is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 847-549-5200 or Lake County CrimeStoppers at 847-662-2222.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Fox Lake Police, Wauconda Police, Lake Villa Police, Lakemoor Police, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, and Palatine Police.
