The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) will honor and celebrate Health Information professionals during the 27th annual Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week April 3-9, 2016. This year’s theme is “Accurate Information, Quality Care.”

Health Information Management is the practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information that is vital to providing quality patient care. HIM is responsible for maintaining and assuring the accuracy and consistency of data over its entire life-cycle, from paper to NextGen where the information is stored, processed and retrieved.

Our Health Information Management (HIM) department recently celebrated 1 year as a centralized department, serving as a resource for the entire agency. In the past year, HIM has centralized many paper records, reduced scanning and Release of Information turn-around times, played a key role in the implementation of ICD-10-CM, and updated many HIPAA policies. HIM had an instrumental 2015 and an even busier 2016 planned including optimization of the Patient Portal, operationalizing the LCHD/CHC involvement in the Metro Chicago Health Information Exchange, managing incoming Electronic Referrals, assisting with various NextGen template go-lives, and establishing Performance Measures for the HIM Department.

During Health Information Professionals Week, HIM will be celebrating with a pizza party for HIM staff to thank them for all that they do in order to ensure Accurate Information and Quality Care for the patients of the LCHD/CHC.
