On August 29, 2017 at approximately 2:35PM, a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was on patrol in the area of Milwaukee Avenue just north of Route 137, unincorporated Libertyville. The Sheriff’s Deputy observed a motorcycle traveling southbound on Milwaukee Avenue at a high rate of speed. He clocked the motorcycle at 121 MPH.
The driver of the motorcycle, Gunnar L. Gudmundson, 25, of the 900 block of Scott Court, Gurnee, attempted to flee from the Sheriff’s Deputy by making a U-turn and pulling into a business parking lot, in the area of Route 137 and Bell Lane, Libertyville. The Sheriff’s Deputy located Gudmundson in the parking lot and attempted to arrest him, but Gudmundson started his motorcycle and accelerated, striking the Sheriff’s Deputy. Gudmundson fell off the motorcycle and the Sheriff’s Deputy was knocked to the ground. Gudmundson fled on foot but was apprehended by the Sheriff’s Deputy a short time later, with the assistance of a good Samaritan.
The Sheriff’s Deputy sustained a hand injury during the encounter. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
Gudmundson was subsequently charged with Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer (Class 3 Felony), Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (Class 4 Felony), Speeding (Class A Misdemeanor), and several other traffic violations.
Gudmundson remains held in the Lake County Jail on $50,000.00 bail. He is next due in court on September 5, 2017 at 1:30PM in Courtroom C-120.
Sheriff Curran reminds the public the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
