The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reminds members of the community to lock your cars, when leaving them unattended. Over the past month, the sheriff’s office has seen an increase in burglaries occurring to motor vehicles throughout Lake County, especially in the northwest quadrant of the county.
Car burglars tend to target unlocked cars parked in driveways during the overnight hours. Generally, burglars will go driveway to driveway, checking door handles to see if they can enter an unlocked car. Once inside, they will steal anything of value. They may also use the garage door opener to attempt to enter the garage or residence.
Sheriff Mark Curran said, “With the warmer months upon us, we generally see an increase in property crimes of opportunity. I urge everyone to keep their cars and homes locked in an effort to avoid becoming a target. If you see any suspicious activity, report it by calling 911!”
Other tips include:
- Always lock your car when it’s left unattended
- Ensure all windows are closed and secured
- Remove or hide all items of value from your car while it’s left unattended
- Consider installing motion-sensor floodlights
- Consider installing exterior home surveillance cameras
