[ARCHIVED] Memorial Day Traffic Safety Campaign Results

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office concluded the Memorial Day traffic safety campaign, as part of the 2017 national Click It or Ticket mobilization. The 11-day traffic safety campaign resulted in 222 total citations. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office conducted 14 traffic safety details during this period, focusing on DUI, speeding, and seatbelt compliance; which resulted in 8 DUI arrests, 96 seatbelt citations, and 37 speeding citations.

“We traditionally see an increase in vehicular traffic during Memorial Day weekend; along with those making the unfortunate decision to drive impaired.” said Sheriff Mark Curran. “Impaired and distracted driving have extremely dangerous consequences. We will be on the roadways throughout the summer to ensure the safety of the motoring public.”

As part of the national Click It or Ticket mobilization, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with law enforcement agencies across the country to help keep vehicle occupants safe. The high visibility enforcement campaign was timed to begin with increased travel for the Memorial Day weekend.

The extra enforcement details are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Administration. The grant is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
