[ARCHIVED] Lake County Jail Inmate Charged with Murder for Hire

On June 21, 2016, the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force obtained information that a Lake County Jail Inmate, Jonathan Velazquez, 34, of the 0-100 block of Sandhurst Road, Mundelein, was attempting to hire someone to kill a witness. Velazquez was being held in the jail on $350,000.00 bail on the charges of criminal sexual assault, for a crime which occurred in Mundelein. It was learned, while in custody, Velazquez was attempting to hire someone to kill a witness in the case regarding the pending charges against him.

Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force Detectives began an immediate investigation. During the investigation, Velazquez continued to make steps forward attempting to hire a ‘hitman.’ Velazquez then made formal arrangements to pay over $1000.00 USC to an individual he believed was going to murder the witness. The ‘hitman’ was actually an informant working with detectives.

Velazquez was subsequently charged with Solicitation of Murder for Hire (Class X Felony) and Solicitation for Murder (Class X Felony) on June 30, 2016. He appeared in bond court on July 1, 2016, where bail was set at $1,000,000.00. He is next due in court on July 9, 2016, at 9:00AM, in courtroom C-120.

Sheriff Curran reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
