On August 27, 2021, a man was apprehended by Sheriff’s Canine Duke after fleeing from deputies.
On August 21, 2021, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an aggravated domestic battery which occurred in the 33600 block of North Evergreen Drive, Unincorporated Grayslake. Deputies learned Mark Mortensen, 42, of the same address, battered a woman he was in a relationship with. During the battery, he used a weapon and stabbed the woman. Mortensen fled and sheriff’s deputies were unable to locate him.
On August 27, 2021, sheriff’s deputies received information Mortensen was at a hospital in the 800 block of South Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville, for an unrelated medical matter and was about to be released. Sheriff’s deputies responded and informed Mortensen he was under arrest, but he fled on foot from sheriff’s deputies.
Sheriff’s deputies pursued Mortensen and Sheriff’s Canine Duke was called in to assist with the apprehension. Mortensen refused to stop for deputies and Canine Duke was deployed. Canine Duke bit and successfully apprehended Mortensen. Mortensen was transported to an area hospital to be treated for the dog bite, where he was subsequently treated and released.
After reviewing the facts of the incidents, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Mortensen:
Three Counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery
Resisting a Peace Officer
Mortensen remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
