On June 18, 2016, at approximately 10:45PM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 173 and North Kilbourne Avenue, Newport Township, for a traffic crash with injuries. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they located a 2004 Nissan Sedan and 2006 Volvo Tractor-Trailer, both with significant damage.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Nissan, a 24-year-old woman from Spring Grove, was traveling eastbound on Route 173, west of Kilbourne Avenue. The driver of the Volvo Tractor-Trailer, a 39-year-old man from Mount Prospect, was traveling westbound on Route 173. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Nissan crossed the center lanes of Route 173, and collided with the westbound Volvo Tractor-Trailer.

The driver of the Nissan became entrapped in her vehicle, and had to be extricated by Newport Fire Protection District. Following the extrication, she was transported to Condell Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Volvo was also transported to Condell Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Route 173 was closed for approximately three hours, while crash investigators conducted their investigation. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
