Ballot Question on Elimination of Recorder of Deeds Office

A question related to the elimination of the Lake County Office of the Recorder of Deeds is on all Lake County voter ballots this November.

  • A 'yes' vote supports eliminating the Lake County Office of the Recorder of Deeds and consolidating its duties with the Lake County Clerk’s Office.
  • A 'no' vote opposes the elimination of the Lake County Office of the Recorder of Deeds.

Question: Is the Lake County Office of the Recorder of Deeds mandatory under the Illinois Constitution?
Answer: The Office is not mandatory under the Illinois Constitution and numerous Counties in Illinois have consolidated this office including Cook and McHenry.  

Question: Will any money be saved by eliminating this Office?
Answer: By eliminating the Recorded of Deeds position, there is an opportunity to save money and further streamline government operations.  

Question: If this ballot item passes, how long will the transition take?
Answer: If the majority response from voters is yes, the office will be eliminated on December 1, 2022 and the Recorder of Deeds will have 2 years to develop a transition plan.

Question: If this ballot item is approved, will any services be eliminated for the public?
Answer: No services are planned to be eliminated that the Recorder’s Office currently provides.
