On February 27, 2020, at approximately 11:10AM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 83 and Westmoreland Drive, Long Grove, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a semi-truck and minivan with major damage.
Preliminary investigation shows a semi-truck, pulling a full-size trailer, driven by an adult male, was traveling northbound on Route 83, approaching Westmoreland Drive. The trailer was loaded with approximately 40,000 pounds of cargo. A 2015 Toyota minivan, driven by a 45-year-old female of Vernon Hills, was traveling southbound on Route 83, and was attempting to turn left onto eastbound Westmoreland Drive.
The semi-truck collided with the Toyota, as the Toyota was turning left. It appears the driver of the semi-truck tried to avoid the collision by veering right. After colliding with the Toyota, the semi-truck struck a traffic light pole and came to rest in a ditch. The driver of the semi-truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses report the traffic light was yellow for Route 83 at the time of the crash.
Countryside Fire Protection District and Mundelein Fire Department responded to the scene. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Southbound Route 83 is expected to be open by 5:30PM, however, northbound Route 83 will be closed for approximately eight-hours for emergency traffic signal repairs.
