On August 26, 2019, at approximately 5:49AM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Sheridan Road north of Yorkhouse Road, Beach Park, for a car versus pedestrian traffic crash. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene and found the pedestrian, a 30-year-old man of Waukegan, laying in the grass, seriously injured.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Campobasso saw the pedestrian had a partial arm amputation, and he was bleeding significantly. Deputy Campobasso applied a tourniquet to the pedestrian’s arm, stopping the bleeding. The pedestrian was transported via ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, with critical injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows the driver of a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, a 29-year-old female of Zion, was traveling southbound on Sheridan Road, just north of Yorkhouse Road. The pedestrian was walking southbound in the southbound outside lane of Sheridan Road. The pedestrian was not wearing any reflective clothing. As the Dodge traveled southbound, the vehicle struck the pedestrian.
Sheriff John Idleburg said, “Deputy Campobasso’s training and experience kicked-in quickly when he arrived at the scene of this serious crash. He arrived at the scene within minutes, quickly discovered this man was losing a significant amount of blood, and applied a tourniquet, likely saving the man’s life.”
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
