On January 22, 2016, a report was made to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office regarding a 20 year-old man, who was having a sexual relationship with a middle school juvenile.
Sheriff’s Detective began a thorough investigation and learned the juvenile met the 20 year old on a popular social media application. Detectives identified the 20 year old as Keanu C. Gibson, of the 2900 block of Gilboa Avenue, Zion.
After numerous conversations on the social media application, Gibson made plans to meet the juvenile for a sexual relationship at the juvenile’s Beach Park residence. On several occasions, Gibson snuck into the juvenile’s residence and engaged in sex acts with the juvenile.
On April 5, 2016, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gibson for one count of Home Invasion (Class X Felony) and five counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felonies). Bail on the arrest warrant was set at $250,000.00.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Services Section and the United States Marshals Service – Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, conducted an operation to apprehend Gibson. On April 14, 2016, Gibson was taken into custody at his residence, without incident, by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service.
Sheriff Mark Curran said, “This sad incident serves as a reminder to parents to monitor their children’s cellular phone and computer use. With the rapid changes in technology, parents should physically inspect all applications in their children’s cellular phones.”
Undersheriff Ray Rose said, “Keeping children safe in our communities is a main priority and we will continue to aggressively investigate all incidents of child exploitation. Our Cybercrimes Unit proactively seeks those hiding behind the internet to sexually exploit children.”
Gibson remains in custody at the Lake County Jail. His next court date is scheduled for April 20, 2016 at 1:30PM, in courtroom C-120.
