On February 1, 2019, Governor Pritzker committed to ending the HIV epidemic in Illinois by signing Executive Order 2019-08. The order will:
- Invest in prevention programs and services, including increased funding for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP), HIV testing, and other public health initiatives.
- Call for viral load metrics to be reported from Medicaid Managed Care Organizations so the state can better monitor progress on access to medication and healthcare for people living with HIV.
In Illinois, 1,375 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2017, disproportionately affecting communities of color. In Lake County, 31 people were newly diagnosed in 2017.
