On July 14, 2018, at approximately 7:30PM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Route 137 in the area of Independence Grove Forest Preserve, for a report of someone shooting a firearm from a moving vehicle. A 911 caller said they observed the driver of a red Toyota shooting the firearm out the window of the vehicle, while driving.Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and North Chicago Police Officers stopped the vehicle in the area of Green Bay Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, in North Chicago. The driver of the vehicle, Sergio Hurtado-Vega, 31, of the 100 block of Philippa Avenue, Waukegan, was taken into custody without incident.It was determined Hurtado-Vega fired a total of eight rounds from a 9mm pistol while driving. Hurtado-Vega was subsequently charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony). He remains held in the Lake County Jail on $250,000.00 bail. Hurtado-Vega is next due in court on August 1, 2018, at 9:00AM in courtroom C-120.Sheriff Curran reminds the public the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
