On May 4, 2018, at 2:40 PM, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 38000 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park for a suicidal subject. The male subject was threatening to harm himself and a family member, using a knife.
Upon deputies’ arrival, they discovered the subject barricaded himself into a bedroom of the residence. The deputies attempted to use verbal de-escalation techniques to gain the subject’s compliance into exiting the bedroom, without success. The deputies forced entry to the bedroom door and discovered the subject was highly agitated while holding a seven-inch knife to themselves. The subject repeatedly told deputies to kill him. As the subject made a motion to stab himself, a deputy deployed a less-lethal beanbag shotgun at the subject’s hand that was holding the knife. This caused the subject to immediately drop the knife. Deputies entered the room and secured the subject without further incident.
The subject was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and for a psychological evaluation.
