On Monday, March 19, the Village of Gurnee unanimously voted in favor of increasing the minimum legal sales age (MLSA) of tobacco products to 21. This ordinance took effect immediately.
Currently eight communities in Lake County, in addition to unincorporated Lake County, have passed Tobacco 21 ordinances: Deerfield, Highland Park, Lincolnshire, Vernon Hills, Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Riverwoods, and Gurnee.
Gurnee marks the 17th community in the state of Illinois to pass a Tobacco 21 ordinance, joining more than 300 cities in 19 states.
