The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of an accreditation program to maintain accountability by verifying recognized professional standards and law enforcement best practices. Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP) assessors will be at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on March 22, 2018, and March 23, 2018, conducting the assessment.
The Sheriff’s Office will be judged based on 67 separate ILEAP standards regarding administration, operations, personnel, and training. The office has been revising its policies and procedures to meet the standards set by ILEAP. The policies and procedures must reflect the standards established by ILEAP and the files developed must show the agency is following those policies and procedures.
Accreditation will demonstrate the agency has achieved a level of professionalism among our law enforcement peers and validates the methods in which our members provide service to the residents and public in our community. In addition to improving our relationship with the community, accreditation improves accountability while limiting liability and risk exposure.
Sheriff Mar Curran said, “I am excited to be a part of the first Illinois Sheriff’s Office to be considered for ILEAP accreditation. ILEAP is recognized as the gold standard in Illinois for police accreditation. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has been about raising the bar and becoming great. Attaining ILEAP accreditation validates success in achieving our goal.”
Two ILEAP assessors, Detective John Lawson of College of Lake County Police Department and Commander Paul Yaras of the Morton Grove Police Department (see attached biographies), will conduct the on-site assessment of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Agency personnel, elected officials, and members of the community are invited to offer comments during a public information ‘call-in’ session to 847-377-7061, on March 22, 2018, from 3:15-4:15 PM. Telephone comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to meet the ILEAP standards.
