[ARCHIVED] It's Not Too Late to Get Your Flu Shot!

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications. As long as flu activity is ongoing, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu illness and serious flu complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older as soon as possible. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection to set in.

Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity continues to be widespread across the United States, including Illinois. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States is currently experiencing the highest level of ILI recorded since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. In Lake County, two flu-related pediatric deaths, 24 flu outbreaks in long term care facilities, and 72 intensive care unit (ICU) admissions have been reported this flu season.
