Lake County Special Investigations Group

Established by the Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group (SIG) is a multi-jurisdictional task force with 26 federal and local law enforcement members, of which 18 are full-time assigned. Participating agencies include the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as analytical support from Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office Gang and Narcotics Division and Illinois National Guard’s Counterdrug Task Force.

SIG focuses on longer term investigations of drug trafficking and money laundering organizations, whether gang, cartel, or unknown affiliation, with the objective of disrupting or dismantling their operations in Lake County and beyond. SIG regularly partners with other narcotics and gang units to force-multiply investigations.

The Group also collaborates with educational, faith-based, civic and parent organizations providing drug and gang-awareness presentations and works with them to develop stronger community relations to prevent gangs from recruiting youth.

The task force also sends representatives to participate in the Lake County Human Trafficking Coalition, the Opioid Initiative’s task force, and other community groups.
