Hospital Payments

When taken to the hospital, all members of the veteran's immediate family, if found to be indigent and eligible for medical assistance from the Department of Public Aid, may be eligible for Veterans Assistance.

To be eligible to qualify, the veteran or responsible relative must apply to the VAC office within 10 days of discharge from the hospital. The VAC will not be responsible for the hospital charges of non-emergency confinement, unless special arrangements have been made with the Superintendent of the VAC prior to such confinement.

If a veteran is hospitalized in one of the County hospitals because of an emergency, assistance may be offered, provided that the hospital notifies the Superintendent of the VAC within 24 hours of admission.
