Stearns School Rd Bridge
Limits: Under Stearns School Road at Mill Creek approximately 1300 feet east of Hutchins Road
Description: Construction of a bridge over Mill Creek. Project will require a 80-day closure and detour to complete the bridge construction.
Current Information
9/20/2023 - In the last few weeks, the contractor has poured the bridge abutments, removed the existing culverts, excavated the creek, and set the bridge beams. They are now working on forming the bridge deck and hope to have it poured next week. Work has also begun on removing the existing pavement on either side of the new bridge.

8/31/2023 - The contractor has finished driving the piles and is currently working on constructing the bridge abutments. Once the abutments are poured, the existing culverts will be removed so that the creek can be excavated.
8/1/2023 - Stearns School Rd is now closed to through traffic between Hutchins Rd and Hunt Club Rd. Please follow the posted detour route. The contractor is beginning to remove the existing pavement and then will excavate for the new bridge abutments. Pile driving for the abutments should begin by the end of this week or early next week.
4/25/2023 - Due to manufacturing time for the steel beams, construction is anticipated to begin in late July.
4/11/2023 - Bridge beam is being manufactured; construction will begin when materials are received.
11/8/2022 - Project is in the 2023 construction program to replace the emergency culvert placed in 2021 with a bridge
6/3/2022 - Construction will begin late in the 2022 season to replace the emergency culvert placed in 2021 with a bridge.
5/24/2021 - Today, the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) reopened Stearns School Road between Hutchins Road and Hunt Club Road to all traffic. With the emergency culvert installation complete, LCDOT is now in stage 2 of a larger project to build a new single span bridge at this location. Design and permitting for the bridge is now underway. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and should occur after the Illinois Tollway’s project on Stearns School Road over I-94 is complete. We thank everyone for their patience over the past two months.
5/17/2021 - The contractor completed installing the new culverts last week and today they poured the concrete slope walls on either side of the road. When the concrete cures the asphalt pavement will be replaced.
5/13/2021 - LCDOT has begun the emergency replacement of the failed culvert and pavement. The road is expected to safely reopen to traffic in 3-4 weeks, weather permitting. The contractor installed a cofferdam to divert water into the new cleaned out east culvert, and a beginning to install the new culvert.

3/25/2021 - Culvert failure was found today during a routine road inspection by LCDOT maintenance personnel. An emergency closure and detour was put into place immediately.
