Native Plants & Trees In Your Yard
Utilizing native plants and trees allows for short and long term positive effects on stormwater runoff quantity and quality. Restoring native vegetation is one of the best things to do for the environment while also saving time and money.
-
Rain Garden
A rain garden is a depressed, landscaped garden planted with native plant species that is designed to retain and infiltrate stormwater runoff from individual residential, sump pumps and roofs.
-
Bioswale
A bioswale is a vegetated open trench designed specifically to temporarily store and infiltrate stormwater. Bioswales are planted with deep-rooted native grasses and forbs.
-
Rain Barrels
A rain barrel is a vessel used to capture and temporarily store rainwater for future use.

Driveway Best Practices
Porous pavement and permeable pavers are materials, structures and pavement designs that are specifically designed to allow water to pass through them so they can infiltrate into the underlying soils. They can be made of pervious concrete, porous asphalt, or permeable interlocking pavers and come in variety of options. The water drainage rate through the porous surfaces will depend on the type of permeable paving system installed.

Dog Waste Management
Dog waste is a major pollutant and contaminant of the water supply (serious health issue). Proper clean up of pets limits the amount of pathogens that can be washed into waterways. Appropriate disposal includes bringing a bag, pick up the waste and then disposing it in the trash.
-
Disconnecting Your Downspouts
Many downspouts on homes in Lake County are directly connected to the stormsewer system, discharging thousands of gallons of stormwater off a single roof each year.
