Alleviating Trauma

Being a victim of crime can leave you feeling emotionally overwhelmed, and attempting to make sense out of the criminal process may seem impossible. Our main purpose is to help alleviate the trauma of victims and witnesses by addressing their concerns and to decrease anxiety often affiliated with the system by giving compassionate guidance through out the court process.

Positive steps are taken to protect the rights and dignity of the victim and witnesses. Some of the areas in which the coordinator can impact victims and witnesses are: empowering victims of crime and witnesses through educating them on the process; being available to explain procedures, terminology, and court dates; accompany victims and witnesses in court; preparing for trial and sentencing hearings; assisting with preparation of victim impact statements; assisting questions on restitution; helping crime victims with crime victim compensation applications, and making appropriate referrals for counseling and other supporting agencies.

Victims and witnesses are encouraged to take advantage of these services. Victim-Witness Coordinators can be reached by calling 847-377-3000 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Have You Faced Victimization More Than Once in Your Life?

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has expanded its services to victims with the addition of a therapy program. Made possible by a grant through the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority,  New Horizons is designed to help victims of crime who have also been a victim at a previous point in life, even if the previous victimization was never reported. Being the victim of a crime can cause a wide range of emotions; balancing this with all the other challenges life brings can be overwhelming. A licensed therapist uses a client-centered, strengths-based approach to help victims identify and reach goals. There is no cost to utilize this service.
