About Us

Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of Lake County Public Works is to provide water and sanitary sewer service to widely distributed portions of the county. We operate and maintain twelve water distribution systems and three sewage treatment plants. If you are unable to find the information you need on these pages, please feel free to call us at 847-377-7500.

History of the Department
The Department of Public Works was created by the Lake County Board in 1962 to address rapid growth and development in Lake County following World War II. Prior to that time, water and sewer service in unincorporated areas was provided by small unregulated treatment works with limited quality control. The board was concerned about pollution, reliable utility service for the growing population, and a long-range plan for orderly growth and development.

The Public Works Department has grown, but our responsibilities remain the same. We continue to provide quality water and sanitary sewer service while protecting our natural resources and planning for the future. We hope you will explore these pages to learn more about our organization and its functions.
