Welcome to the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center. Our web site is geared to provide you with a broad overview of our many comprehensive programs and services. Our primary mission, within the overall framework of Lake County government, is the promotion of health, the prevention of disease and disability, and the protection of our environment.
Currently the Health Department’s small allocation of H1N1 vaccine is being transferred to a number of pediatricians and obstetricians/gynecologists in Lake County in order to target high risk populations.
We expect to continue to receive allocations of H1N1 vaccine in the coming weeks. Please know that we’re working hard to ensure the vaccine is made available to residents as soon as possible. Future clinic dates, times and locations will be posted as soon as they are scheduled. Thank you for your cooperation and patients. Please continue to refer to our flu hotline and web site for updates.

Visit our Air Quality web page to learn about asthma, mold, and download a brochure on how to reduce asthma triggers in your home. Asthma is a disease that causes the airways of the lungs to tighten. An asthma attack occurs when the lungs aren’t getting enough air necessary for breathing. There is no cure for asthma, but understanding the symptoms of an asthma attack, as well as possible triggers (things that could cause an asthma attack) can help keep asthma under control. Asthma can be triggered by a number of indoor and outdoor allergens, including dust mites, secondhand smoke, pet dander, pollutants, mold, chemicals, emissions from cars, strenuous activity and stress. The more you know and understand about asthma, the better it can be controlled.

Know where to go! - (en Espanol) In the case of an illness outbreak or bioterrorism event, you may be asked to visit your local polling place to pick up medicine for your family. During recent months the Health Department has worked with the County Clerk’s office, townships and municipalities to develop a plan that would utilize local polling places as points of distribution during a public health emergency. By utilizing the polling sites, the population will be spread out to a large number of locations close to home, alleviating possible traffic congestion and reducing the need to travel far. Locate your polling place.

The 10 Leading Health Indicators
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has adopted the U.S. Surgeon General’s 10 leading health indicators as a tool to assess the county’s overall health. For each indicator, the Department has specific health goals it is helping the County meet by the year 2010. The 10 Leading Health Indicators is available in PDF format.
“Lake County Health Focus” Cable Show
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has its own cable television show produced in collaboration with LCTV. “Lake County Health Focus” is geared to provide Lake County residents with a better perspective about their health and the health of their community. The series features nutrition tips, health facts, restaurant highlights and discussions with Health Department staff.
The Health Department was established by referendum in 1956, as a state-certified public health department. At that time, the staff consisted of a handful of people. Today, our budget of approximately $70 million supports 60 separately funded programs. More than 1000 professionals assist our daily mission of health promotion, illness prevention and protection of the environment.
As the largest human service provider in Lake County, we believe that services must be available without barriers. No residents are turned away due to an inability to pay. We also believe in providing services in an environment of mutual respect, free of discrimination or bias.
The Health Department is governed by a 12-member Board of Health. Members are appointed by the Lake County Board, and are Lake County residents of various backgrounds.
We are proud to be among the top 6 percent of 2,864 local health departments nationwide by population serviced, financing and workforce. We thank the organizations we partner with to achieve our goals, as well as the Board of Health, our Governing Council and Lake County Board members for their direction and leadership.
