Included in this compact disc are all the active railroads, public roads, and selected private roads within Lake County, Illinois in ESRI shapefile format. FGDC compliant metadata is included for each shapefile in ASCII text and XML.
Railroads are entirely photo interpreted using orthophotography captured in April, 2000 and April, 2005. Attributes include length of track and ownership of the trunk lines.
Roads are initially entered using recorded documents and then later adjusted using current aerial photography. The road centerlines include road names, left and right address ranges, left and right zip codes, a permanent id number, the road's Census Feature Class Code (CFCC) and the date of last edit.
Both of these data products are intended to satisfy National Map Accuracy Standards for a 1:1200 product. These centerlines have been provided to the United States Census Bureau and were used to conflate the TIGER road features for Lake County. The Census Bureau evaluated these centerlines and, based on field survey of 109 intersections, determined that there is a 95% confidence level that the coordinate positions in the centerline dataset fall within 1.9 meters of their true ground position. These datasets are useful as a cartographic backdrop or for detailed spatial analysis.
These files are in the form of ESRI shapefiles using the Illinois State Plane Projection, East Zone, and the NAD83 horizontal datum. The units of measurement used in county mapping are feet.
NOTE: CAD users, this is a large, county wide dataset optimized for use with GIS software. CAD software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation may NOT be able to open this dataset. Make sure your software and computer can handle this file size effectively before purchasing.
The Roads and Railroads compact disc may be purchased for $50. The purchase price is not refundable. A defective disc may be exchanged for a replacement disc for the same product at no charge. Purchasers should verify that the software they plan to use with this data is capable of reading Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shape files before buying the compact disc. No software is provided with the data.
