Licenses

Marriage

Marriage licenses obtained in Lake County may not be used in any other county. Both the bride and the groom must apply in person for the marriage license. A license to marry becomes effective in the county where it was issued one (1) day after the date of issuance (unless the court orders the license is effective when issued) and expires sixty (60) days after it becomes effective.

More information is available on the County Clerk's website.

Liquor

Bars, restaurants, liquor stores, convenience stores and grocery stores located in unincorporated Lake County must apply for a liquor license if they wish to sell alcohol. The County Board Chairman is head of the Liquor Commission and appoints members who vote to issue liquor licenses to individual applicants.

Applicants for liquor licenses must call the County Board Office at 847.377.2300 to schedule an appointment.

Business

Lake County does not issue general permits or licenses to operate a business. Some local municipalities may require a business license or registration. Contact the appropriate municipal government to obtain correct information on licenses.

Individuals doing business in Lake County under an assumed business name are required by law to register the business name with the Lake County Clerk's office. This requirement includes registration for sole proprietorships and general partnerships.
