Seasonal Influenza (Flu)
The flu is a contagious, viral respiratory illness. Symptoms can range from mild to severe which could lead to death. In order to reduce the risk of getting the flu, it is important to get the flu vaccination each year.
While flu is unpredictable, it is likely that 2009 H1N1 viruses and regular seasonal viruses will cause illness in the U.S. this flu season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season. You only need one flu shot this year. However, children younger than nine who have not been vaccinated for influenza in the past will need two doses of the flu vaccine.
Unlike previous years when vaccination was recommended only to certain categories, this year everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated against influenza, especially pregnant women, young children, people 65 years of age and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
In Lake County, the flu season typically lasts from November through April. The Lake County Health Department's Immunization Program conducts public flu vaccination clinics throughout the County every fall. The Department also works in conjunction with hospitals, other health care providers and schools regarding tracking disease occurrence, prevention and treatment, disease control and public education.
